1) Hampstead
Hampstead is a romantic comedy/ drama set against the beautiful backdrop of Hampstead, London. It is (loosely) based on the true story of Harry Hallowes who lived in Hampstead Heath in a camp for 12 years.
I adore how this movie showcases the stunning nature of England, even amidst the urban landscape of London. It’s also refreshing to see a story that focuses on the friendship and romance of a middle-aged/ older couple.
2) The Secret World of Arrietty
Studio Ghibli’s “The Secret World of Arrietty” is loosely inspired by the 1952 novel “The Borrowers” by Mary Norton. This cosy animated film follows the adventures of the teenage borrower, Arrietty, as she navigates the dangers of the gigantic human world and forms an unlikely friendship with a human boy named Sho. Like all studio Ghibli films, the visuals are incredible, and it’s enchanting to see beautiful backdrops inspired by rural Japan from a different perspective.
3) Anne of Green Gables
The 4-part movie series “Anne of Green Gables” (1985) is adapted from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book series of the same name. The story revolves around a young orphan girl named Anne who, after an unexpected turn of events, finds a new home with a pair of elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on Green Gables farm. The films (and books!) have a rustic and nostalgic feel, complete with beautiful dresses, old-fashioned interiors, and an idyllic rural setting.
4) Matilda
Matilda is a movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book about a extraordinarily intelligent girl with telekinetic abilities. The protagonist, Matilda, endures mistreatment from her family and headteacher Miss Trunchbull, but finds solace in her teacher – the kind Miss Honey.
Miss Honey’s cottage is undoubtedly one of the most cottagecore homes you could dream of! Whether it’s the rows of blossoms against the garden walls, the old-fashioned fireplace, the dainty teacups with intricate floral designs, or the sweet, soothing demeanour of Miss Honey, there’s something incredibly cosy and nostalgic about this film.
5) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Set in WW2, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe follows the journey of four English siblings who are evacuated from their home in London and move to the countryside. While playing in their new surroundings, they stumble upon a magical realm hidden within a wardrobe. Whether the characters are in Professor Kirke’s grand mansion, Mr. Tumnus’s cozy cave, or the welcoming den of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, the sets within this film have a fantastical cottagecore feel.
6) The Princess Bride
“The Princess Bride” is a movie about Westley, a farmhand, who falls in love with Princess Buttercup while working on her family’s farm. With the help of a growing band of accomplices, he later embarks on a mission to rescue her from an evil prince. This cottagecore film is a blend of comedy, fantasy, and romance and features forests, magnificent castles, charming farms, and enchanting medieval costumes.
